Provident living can be rewarding...and fun!

Provident living can sometimes conjure up images of living in a rustic cabin deep in the woods with no electricity, running water, or, (cringe) no indoor plumbing. Fortunately, we can enjoy the rewards of provident living without turning the calendar back to the 1800's.  But let's not push aside the lessons of provident living from the self-reliant pioneers. There's much to be learned from them about being able to grow our own food, make laundry soap, use herbs to heal sickness, and butcher (umm, I'm mostly vegetarian) raise cute little chickens. Admittedly, whenever I read the Little House on the Prairie books to my children I envision myself as Ma Ingalls with the children gathered around in the cozy cabin listening to Pa playing the fiddle. There is something about that simple, albeit physically demanding, life that is appealing. Part of the appeal is the self-reliance, but perhaps just as important is the family togetherness without the distractions of televisions, cell phones, soccer practice, or other activites that pull family members in different directions. By learning to live providently we can learn the necessary skills to become self-reliant. We can also share in these activities with other family members, creating a bond that can often get lost in the bustle of everyday life. The truth is that provident living is rewarding...and even fun! Now, if I can just convince my husband to learn how to play the fiddle...

Welcome to my Provident Mama blog. I hope you enjoy learning about provident and self-reliant living.

Enjoy!
